Police say an 10-year-old girl was killed in a Greenport car crash Tuesday night.
Authorities say 71-year-old Paul Greenfeld, of Port Jefferson, was turning onto Route 48 from Chapel Lane when he crashed into another car around 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Officials say the car Greenfeld hit was driven by 32-year-old Rachel Smith, of Greenport, who had her daughter, 10-year-old Amber Stulsky, in the back seat.
Smith's daughter was rushed to the hospital, where she later died.
Police Chief Martin Flatley says there have been other crashes at that same intersection over the years.
In a letter that went out to families in the district, the Southold superintendent said in part, "Our heartfelt condolences go out to Amber's family and friends. She was a lovely little girl and our staff is heartbroken. Please be assured that the Southold faculty and staff will be providing any and all support for your children during this difficult time."
Grief counselors were at the school. Officials say they will stay there as long as needed.
Wednesday would have been Stulsky's first day of fifth grade.
Police say no speeding, drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.
The vehicles were impounded for a safety check, but no arrests have been made.
