Police say a Riverhead man was arrested Tuesday for fatally shooting his wife.

They say hostage negotiators responded to a house on Doris Avenue around 9 a.m. after receiving reports of a man carrying a handgun.

Police say the suspect, 65-year-old Robert Brown, barricaded himself in the home for nearly four hours until officers knocked down the front door and took him into custody.

Officials say inside the house, Brown's wife, 71-year-old Sarah Brown, was found dead from a gunshot wound.

Brown was charged with second-degree murder. Police say he will be arraigned at the Town of Riverhead Justice Court on Wednesday.
