Police: Officer shot dog who reportedly charged at him in Wantagh

A police officer reportedly shot a dog in Wantagh Saturday night.
Police say they got a 911 call for a suspicious person in the area of Cherrywood Drive.
While speaking to the person who called in the complaint, police say her dog got loose and charged at the officer.
The officer retreated and fired his service weapon at the dog.
The dog was taken to a veterinarian for treatment.
The officer fell backwards in his retreat, fell backwards and struck his head on the pavement. He was transported to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment.
