Police are looking for the driver who fatally struck a 17-year-old girl in Port Jefferson Station and then left the scene Saturday night.

It happened on Nesconset Highway by Terryville Road shortly before 9:30 p.m.

Police say 17-year-old Jenna Perez, of Selden, was crossing the highway about 300 feet west of Terryville Road when she was hit by a vehicle that was heading west. Police say the driver left the scene.

Perez was pronounced dead.

A memorial at the site of the crash has been growing.

Neighbors say it's a busy area with a lot of traffic. One described it as a "dangerous area" and a very busy intersection.

Perez was a student at Newfield High School within Middle Country School District. In a statement, the district said that it sends it deepest condolences to her family and friends. It said counseling will be made available Monday at the high school for her classmates, teachers and staff members.

Police are asking anyone with information about the case to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
