Police say an elderly couple died in an apparent murder-suicide this morning on Breeze Avenue in Ronkonkoma.

Police say Valentin Hernandez, 90, called 911 around 10 a.m. to say he shot his 90-year-old wife Dorothea and then hung up. A 911 operator called back twice and both times he said the same thing.

Police traced the call because he called from his home number.

Police say Hernandez was found with a gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted.

Neighbors say the wife was in failing health. Neighbors also say the couple had children and grandchildren, and had lived in the Breeze Avenue home for decades.
