Guide: MTV's VMAs is heading to the Prudential Center in NJ

The MTV's 36th annual Video Music Awards will be held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey featuring some of music’s top performers. Here is everything that you need to know before the event. 

WHEN: The VMAs will kick off Monday, August 26, at 8 p.m. A red carpet event highlighting the fashion of the evening will be held prior to the show. 

WHERE: The event will be held at the Prudential Center in Newark. This is the first time the VMAs will be held in New Jersey. Click here for directions. 

STAGE LINE-UP: Some of the schedule performers will include Missy Elliott, Bad Bunny, Big Sean, Camila Cabello, Jonas Brothers, Lil Nas X, Taylor Swift and Shawn Mendes. Click here to see a full list of stars performing from

TRAFFIC AROUND THE AREA: Newark police are warning residents and business owners of downtown gridlock during rush hour with major street closures. Here are the road closures:

Sunday, August 25, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Mulberry Street between Market Street and Lafayette Street.

Monday, August 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 a.m.
- Mulberry Street, from Lafayette Street to Market Street.

WHO CAN VOTE: The public is able to vote for nominees on the MTV website. Voters are able to vote 10 times a day per category.  

Who is receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard? Missy Elliot will be receiving the 2019 Vanguard award.


In honor of receiving this year’s Vanguard award, MTV VMAs and Pepsi are launching the Museum of Missy Elliot. The museum will be an an interactive, social-media experience honoring Missy Elliott and the creative visionaries behind some of her music videos. 

The Museum of Missy Elliot will be open  August 24 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and August 25 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 632 Broadway in New York City. Tickets and reservations for The Museum of Missy are available here.
