The location of Long Island’s first broadcast newscast is now a landmark.
The historical marker was unveiled Tuesday at the location of Long Island’s first commercial radio newscast.
The radio tower from WGBB is still standing on Bedell Street in Freeport.
The station first went live in 1924, and was the station Long Islanders relied on for local news beyond New York City, before there was a News 12.
It was well-known for its Pet Patrol to find lost pets.
Dave Vieser was a DJ with the station for 11 years, and News 12’s own Carol Silva and Danielle Campbell started their careers there.
