A Commack man is walking to win the battle against cancer -- step by step, all the way to the Montauk Lighthouse.

Desmond Cook set out on Thursday to walk 111 miles in three days in honor of two family members. Cook said his brother-in-law, Mike Adams, and wife's aunt, Gail Villani, both have died from cancer. Adams died of pancreatic cancer and Villani died of melanoma, he says.

Cook began his journey in Old Westbury, where Villani lived, and says he hopes to be in Montauk in three days. On a GoFundMe page he created, he encourages supporters to meet him at "the famous circle" in Montauk around 3 p.m. on Aug. 17, and walk with him for the last 5 miles to the Montauk Lighthouse.

Cooke says he feels blessed to help in his own small way and is grateful for the tremendous support and love he has been given.

Contributions to Cook's GoFundMe page will be donated to Lustgarten Foundation to support pancreatic cancer research, in memory of Adams, and Melanoma Research Foundation in memory of Villani.
