A Farmingdale woman lost her wedding ring in the sand, and her cry for help on social media brought her a new friend -- and also her ring.
Friday began as a relaxing day at Tobay Beach. Lauren Lantosca says that calm quickly turned into chaos when she suddenly realized her wedding ring was missing.
"I was panicking," Lantosca said. "In my head, I was just like this ring is gone. There's no way I'm going to find it."
With nowhere left to turn, Lantosca jumped online and posted her predicament on a Facebook forum.
The desperate plea was spotted by Susan Fabian -- who happens to own a metal detector.
Fabian immediately drove to the beach where she started searching systematically for the missing wedding band.
"Something told me that I could help find this ring," Fabian said.
The search went on for about a half an hour. But even as it got dark, Fabian never gave up hope that she'd eventually find the ring.
And sure enough -- the metal detector went wild.
"I just moved the sand with my fingers and I all of a sudden saw a glistening of diamonds. And I lost my breath for a minute. I picked it up and I yelled out, 'I found, it I found it,'" said Fabian.
It turns out, both women live in Farmingdale -- so like the good neighbor she is, Fabian hand-delivered the ring to its rightful owner.
"She was really selfless and very kind," Lantosca said. "We're friends now. She came into my life for a reason and I think Susan's a wonderful person and I'm grateful for her."
The two women say they plan to stay in touch.
And next time she goes to the beach, Lantosca says she'll leave her rings at home.
