Suffolk County is taking steps to make sure the public knows what to do in an active shooter situation.

Officials are announcing a series of upcoming active shooter exercises. They are meant, in part, to test the new initiative SHARE, or Sharing to Help Access Remote Entry, which allow schools to share their existing camera systems directly with county police.

The drills will also use the Rave Panic Button – a mobile app that delivers critical data to 911 dispatchers and first responders.

The first exercise will be held at a West Babylon school later this month.

The department also plans to partner with big box stores and religious institutions.

The exercises were announced amid another national conversation regarding guns amid two mass shootings last week.
