Father-son duo plot to build Long Island's first surf park

SHIRLEY -

Long Island has some options for surfing, but two Bay Shore men are hoping to build the perfect place to catch some waves.

Chris and Brett Portera spend a lot of time waiting for the right wave, and wanted to find a way to avoid facing some bad days in the water.

Their answer: Turning a 4-acre piece of land off the Long Island Expressway in Shirley into Long Island's first surf park. The park would provide a 52,000-square-foot pool providing perfect waves every day, all year long.

The Porteras have spent four years developing their plans for the park. They say it's the perfect father-son project -- Chris has the old school business experience, while Brett has the youthful enthusiasm.

The duo also has 60 years combined in surfing experience that they'll use to set their surf park apart. Their goal is to set the standard for surf parks around the world.

Chris and Brett also say they aren't building the park to take people out of the ocean. They plan on offering lessons so that eventually fledgling surfers feel comfortable enough to join them.
