North Bellmore residents are pushing for a traffic light at an intersection where a Nassau police officer was injured in a hit-and-run.
The crash happened at the intersection of Bellmore Avenue, Alice Avenue and Davenport Place in July. Neighbors say that crash was far from the first one at the intersection, but believe a traffic light could make a big difference in reducing the number of future accidents.
Neighbors tell News 12 drivers speed in the area and that sight lines are poor. The intersection is also close to a school, and neighbors are concerned about children crossing the road.
Residents started an online petition over a week ago to push for a traffic light, which has since reached 600 signatures. After a previous push by residents in 2016, Nassau County officials told News 12 at the time that they would investigate the need for a traffic light.
Nassau officials decided against a traffic signal then.
Officials with the Department of Public Works say that since the Town of Hempstead has made changes to street parking in the area, Nassau County will take another look at the issues with no timetable given for a decision.
