A battle is brewing over money at Malibu Beach Park in Lido Beach, and Hempstead's town supervisor is expressing outrage over new revelations concerning a vendor contract at the beach.

Town Supervisor Laura Gillen is calling for the town board to authorize the hiring of an outside legal counsel to investigate the town's dealings with Dover Gourmet Corp.

The supervisor is accusing the town Parks Commissioner, Daniel Lino, and other officials of negotiating a "backroom deal" with Butch Yamali of Dover. She says Dover owes the town more than $500,000 in back rent as a result.

Gillen says the contract should be nullified now. Yamali says his business has acted legally and in accordance with its town vendor contract. He is accusing Gillen of playing politics.

Yamali points to an email he sent out from the Gillen campaign, seeking contributions while touting her fight against Dover.

"Butch -- You and your family are expected to pay your rent and mortgage on time. So why hasn't Dover paid the Town of Hempstead?" the email says in part. "Join my campaign today with a $25, $50 or $100 contribution if you agree."

In a video released by Dover, Yamali says he has an agreement with the town to offset rent payments because Hempstead actually owes him $2 million.

The board's majority leader, Erin King Sweeney, supports hiring outside legal counsel to investigate the matter, but says the resignation call is inappropriate until, "facts substantiate the need to do so."
