Police tell News 12 that a woman has died after she was hit by a van and then dragged down Deer Park Avenue in North Babylon.
They say a van struck a male in a driveway on Commack Road and Route 231 around 1 p.m. Monday. Police say a woman was then struck along Deer Park Avenue and Garnet Street and then was dragged by that vehicle down the street for half a mile.
The woman was transported to the hospital and died from her injuries.
The man was also taken to the hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
Police say the victims knew each other.
A portion of Deer Park Avenue from Weeks Road to Bay Shore Road was closed for hours.
The driver of the van has been located, but police will not say if they have been arrested.
Witnesses say they are shell-shocked from what they saw.
"It's heart wrenching, not good to see," said Peter Biscardi, of North Babylon. "My wife is shaken up from it. I'm sure a couple other people were, too. They were caught off guard seeing a dead body on the floor."
The victim's identity has not yet been released.
