Officials in Babylon say they are looking to crack down on teenagers riding dangerously on their bicycles.
Footage released earlier this summer shows young bike riders taking up an entire lane. Some of the teens were also playing chicken on the roads by racing their bikes in front of cars in the middle of traffic.
Some of these group rides, called rideouts, are organized on social media.
Officials say the hotspots for this type of activity are down by the dock and busy areas like on Main Street.
Gerard Glass, the village attorney for Babylon, says they are considering a new law that would allow village code enforcement officers to impound the bikes of those under 16 years old. Those older than 16 could face fines and potential jail time.
Glass says they are working with Suffolk County police to stop the dangerous biking incidents.
"We want to get the message out that this kind of stuff will not be tolerated," Glass said.
Villages officials say they will call a child's parents after impounding a bike and then return it.
Some parents say that the new measure might be safer for teenagers in the long run.
A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for Aug. 13 at Village Hall.
