Protesters took to the streets of Huntington Saturday to rally against what they call the inhumane treatment of asylum seekers at the southern border.

Dozens were on the corner of Route 110 and Jericho Turnpike asking the public to pay attention to the country's current immigration policy and how it impacts people here on Long Island.

Organizers of the “Don’t Look Away” rally say 13,000 children are in detention centers across the country instead of being with their families.

Manuel Gamez says he couldn't be with his 13-year-old daughter after she hanged herself and was declared brain dead at a Suffolk hospital. He says it was because he was detained trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border.

Many people said they hope President Donald Trump hears stories like Gamez’s.

"We're all human beings, I don't think there's anyone advocating for no immigration policy. We need an immigration policy that makes sense, but we need to make sure it's done in a humane way," says Melanie D'Arrigo, of Port Washington.
