Residents head to pools, cooling centers, beaches amid heat wave

Posted: Updated:
JONES BEACH -

Long Island residents will be seeking out pools, cooling centers and beaches during this weekend's heat wave.

Jones Beach will have extended hours through Sunday. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has ordered some state parks to have extended hours to give New York residents a break from the heat.

Other parks that have extended hours include Sunken Meadow, Robert Moses, Orient and Heckscher beaches, Wildwood Park, Hither Hills and Montauk Downs.

Towns across Long Island are also extending hours at pools and beaches. Hempstead Town has extended hours at public pools and the Town of Huntington is keeping Dix Hills Park Pool open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. during the weekend.

Officials from Nassau County SPCA say to not leave animals, especially dogs, outside for longer than necessary.

Both Nassau and Suffolk counties have opened up cooling centers.

Jones Beach held a Beach Bash Soccer Tournament Saturday. The organizer said they wanted to finish the games before it got too hot in the middle of the day. He said they talked with parents and coaches about canceling the event but decided not to.

Doctors tell News 12 the signs of heat exhaustion include confusion, fatigue, light-headedness and headaches. They say to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water or other beverages with electrolytes and to avoid drinks with caffeine.
