Education department names new acting state education commissioner

The State Education Department has named a new state education commissioner after Commissioner MaryEllen Elia unexpectedly announced her resignation.
Beth Berlin, who has been serving as executive deputy education commissioner, will step in as acting state education commissioner just in time for the new school year.
Her role is set to commence on Sept. 1.
Meanwhile, Elia will reportedly work for a national firm that helps school districts with so-called turnaround plans.
