The alleged gunman in a fatal shooting at a Medford party faced a judge Thursday.
According to police, Corey Coach, 25, shot and killed Darnell Smith, 36, of East Patchogue.
The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. Saturday near Cedar Lane as, police say, a large group of people fought in the street.
Coach, of Medford, faces charges including manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
The prosecutor said that Coach wrote a written statement confessing to the incident and that there were multiple people on scene who identified Coach as the shooter.
Family and friends of Smith say they are glad Coach is in custody, but that it won't bring Smith back. They say they are doing the only thing they can to try and make peace with their loss - pray and honor his memory.
Smith's family says they set up a GoFundMe to help support his family.
The judge set Coach’s bail at $500,000. He is due back in court on Friday.
