The CDC and FDA are investigating an outbreak of salmonella infections linked to pig ear dog treats.

Federal officials say 45 people in 13 states, including New York, have been affected. They say at least 12 of the 45 people sickened have been hospitalized.

Dr. Evangelos Loukas, of Plainview Hospital, explained that "there is a possibility that these specific treats are contaminated with salmonella and what is occurring is direct transmission of salmonella from the treat to human."

Retailer Pet Supplies Plus has recalled bulk pig ear treats sold in its stores.

The FDA says salmonella discovered in the treats can infect people either from handling the treats or directly from their dog.

The most common symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, nausea, fever, abdominal cramps and pain.

The CDC says dog owners should:

- Wash their hands with soap and water after handling pet food or treats.
- Don't allow a dog to lick a person's mouth or face after feeding the animal a treat or food.
- Keep pet food and treats away from young children, especially those 5 years of age or younger.

Dr. Loukas says those treats should be discarded.
