Thousands headed to the beaches Thursday to celebrate July Fourth.

An official with New York State Parks said that Jones Beach reached its capacity around 9 p.m. for its annual fireworks display. Parking lots were closed to late arriving revelers. 

George Gorman, the deputy regional director New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, says this is the first time Jones Beach filled to capacity since it started again in 2014.

Many beachgoers came out early to enjoy the sun before the fireworks at night. Officials say cars arrived as early as 5:30 a.m. to get into some facilities.

Some parks and beaches were filled to capacity before noon. Orient Beach, Wildwood State Park and Sunken Meadow State Park and Hempstead Lake State Park were all forced to close due to the number of people. Some did reopen during the day.
