PSEG LI crews work around the clock to restore power after summer storm

COMMACK -

Crews continued to work around the clock Tuesday on restoring power to the thousands of Long Islanders still out after Sunday's summer storm.

Commack was one of the hardest hit areas, along with Northport, East Northport and Brentwood.

PSEG Long Island says hundreds of crews, many from out of state, were trying to get everyone back on by Tuesday, but some would be powerless until Wednesday.

At the height of the storm, around 80,000 customers were in the dark. About 6,000 are currently without power.

A resident in Commack who lives on Shirley Court says she has been out of power for three days. “We've been out for three days. Trucks just arrived today,” she says. “We have a neighbor across the street without oxygen, and PSEG has not been communicating.”

PSEG Long Island has since set up sites in the neighborhoods hit hardest by the storm to provide customers with information, water and snacks, as well as cooling centers and places where customers can charge their phones.

Mark Horncastle is another resident without power who says PSEG’s poor communication is a slap in the face. “And they are raising our rates 7% next year, this is fantastic,” he says.

Those who still need to report an outage can call 1-800-490-0075. Residents enrolled in the PSEG LI texting service can text the word OUT to PSEGLI (773454).

"We realize this is frustrating and appreciate our customers’ understanding of the magnitude of the damage the storm created,” says PSEG Long Island.
