OCEANSIDE -

A final farewell will be held this week for a retired NYPD detective from Oceanside who lost his life after battling a Sept. 11-related illness.

Lou Alvarez famously helped lead the fight for the 9/11 victim's compensation fund.

A wake is being held tomorrow at Towers Funeral Home in Oceanside.

A funeral mass will follow on Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Church in Astoria.

In lieu of flowers, the Alvarez family is asking donations be made in his name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
