A Suffolk woman is battling highway officials in an effort to recoup money spent to fix her car when it was damaged by a pothole.
Jillian McMahon says her car hit a large crevice on the westbound service road of Sunrise Highway at Exit 59.
"I couldn't believe the way my tire blew out," says McMahon. "I almost went into the trees."
Since the incident, McMahon has been in an ongoing battle between the New York State Department of Transportation and the Town of Brookhaven's Highway Department. She wants the responsible municipality to pay the $300 it costs to replace her tire, however, both have sent letters saying it's not their pothole.
News 12 spoke with both town and state officials. Both are adamant that the part of the road where McMahon's car was damaged is not their responsibility.
Brookhaven officials say they have done their job and paved their side of the road. It happens to stop right at the pothole in question.
McMahon says aside from the money she is concerned about safety and says she has seen other cars on the road with their tires blown from the crevice.
