Newsday: State challenging Shinnecock's sovereignty over billboard property

The state DOT and the Town of Southampton have issued stop-work orders to end construction, which the tribe did not adhere to.

The battle over some East End billboards could be heading to court.
Newsday reports the state is challenging the Shinnecock Nation's sovereignty over land on Sunrise Highway in Hampton Bays.
The land is where the Shinnecock's put up one electronic billboard and have started construction on the second on the north side of Sunrise.
The state DOT and the Town of Southampton have issued stop-work orders to end construction, which the Shinnecock's ignored.
They say as a sovereign nation, they don't have to adhere to them.
