Onlookers marvel at marooned boat on Jones Beach

People were marveling Thursday at the sight of a marooned boat on the sands of Jones Beach.

George Gorman, of the state Office of Parks, says the fishing boat called the "Roger Venture" washed up on shore last week. He says it was being towed by another boat.

Gorman says the owner of the boat picked it up from a marina in Connecticut and was towing it to Cape Canaveral, Florida, when the tow line broke. He says the owner called the Coast Guard to let them know.

Seeing pictures posted online by photographers, Shannon Hargraves brought her kids to see the boat. She says it was much larger in person.

Officials have the roughly 40-foot-long boat anchored to shore to keep it from being taken out by the tide.

Gorman says the Coast Guard removed 700 gallons of fuel oil from the boat and that security teams are making sure no one tries to climb into it. He says whether they make other use of the boat or destroy it, it'll be gone from the beach in the coming days.

Parks officials say the boat's owner will pay whatever it costs to remove it from the beach.
