A suspected Bloods gang member was sentenced Thursday to a maximum of eight to 24 years in prison for fatally running down a deliveryman in the Hamptons.
Chace Quinn had pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an incident resulting in death, intimidating a witness and DWI for running down 63-year-old Joseph McAlla and leaving him to die on a Southampton street last spring.
Prosecutors say Quinn is a Bloods gang member who lives on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation.
McAlla's wife of nearly 45 years, Jean, read a victim impact statement before sentencing: "There is no amount of time in a situation like this that will make this sadness go away! Not having time to say goodbye is so traumatic and it affects me every day."
And McAlla's daughter said: "We have been offered a few minutes to tell the court what it's all been like. Every moment of despair, every anger-filled day, all the lost time, the unanswered questions, the permanent scars -- all squeezed into a few simple paragraphs."
Judge Fernando Camacho described McAlla as a kind-hearted, good man who only wanted to take care of his family. He called Quinn a career criminal with no regard for human life. The judge went on to say: "I've only said this a handful of times in 22 years. Mr. Quinn is an extreme danger to the community and can never be rehabilitated."
Quinn's attorney said his client has shown remorse and took responsibility for his actions.
