Final preps underway for LI Pride festivities

HEMPSTEAD -

The Town of Hempstead is getting ready to celebrate what's billed as the nation's largest LGBT beach festival: Long Island Pride.

The pride flag is now flying outside Hempstead Town Hall in preparation of Pride Week.

Officials laid out plans Tuesday for Pride on the Beach in Long Beach, which is expected to draw tens of thousands of revelers this weekend. Extra LIRR trains and buses have been added to accommodate the crowds.

This year's events come in the wake of multiple homophobic threats against Pride Week. But officials say they won't let that dampen the festivities.

"It makes more people come out to celebrate and show that love wins," says LGBT Network CEO David Kilmnick.

Still, Long Beach officials say security is being ramped up, especially for Sunday's pride parade.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the uprising at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan, which is considered as the unofficial start of the gay rights movement.
