Street renamed after fallen NYPD detective in Jamesport

A street in Jamesport was renamed after an NYPD detective who was killed while responding to a robbery in Queens in February.
Part of South Jamesport Avenue will now be known as Detective Brian Simonsen Way.
Simonsen’s wife, Leanne, says her main goal is to make sure her husband is “never forgotten.”
“He's just the most amazing man you'll ever meet, and I think this just proves how much he was loved," she told News 12.
Detective Simonsen had been responding to a call of an armed robbery at a cellphone store when the suspect charged at officers. Police opened fire and Simonsen was hit by friendly fire. He passed away at the hospital.
During the dedication ceremony, friends spoke highly of their friend Simonsen, whose nickname was "Smiles."
"Every picture he's in he's smiling, he had a smile on his face 24/7," says Sean Mackie.
The detective grew up on Jamesport Avenue. It’s also the location of his final resting place at a nearby cemetery.
Detective Simonsen's mother Linda and his wife Leanne say they'll pass the street sign whenever they visit him.
