Getting into his Port Jefferson Station home was a struggle for Keith Mauro, who is wheelchair-bound and has ALS. But that struggle is no longer thanks to a group called Rescuing Families.
Mauro, his wife Karen and his stepdaughter Olivia, who also has a disability, say the home makeover from the not-for-profit group has been a blessing.
Volunteers from Rescuing Families spent the past 2 1/2 months making their house a better home.
The couple says the work is amazing and they can never thank the volunteers enough.
Gina Centauro and her husband Vinny say they started Rescuing Families because they know firsthand the hardships families face when a loved one becomes sick or disabled.
The group painted, tiled, hammered and nailed -- making narrow doors wider -- as well as sprucing up the ranch home with new flooring and a new stone fireplace. The bathroom has been completely remodeled and is wheelchair-accessible.
Sean Mann, Karen and Keith's friend, wrote the email to Rescuing Families explaining why he thought the family needed a helping hand.
The Mauros were out of their home for months and only expected to return to a renovated bathroom.
