Neighbor: Abandoned, overgrown home cleaned up by stranger
Some Canarsie residents say they're concerned about an abandoned property on Avenue K, which they think could be dangerous to the public.
The property on Avenue K and East 103rd Street was covered in dense shrubs, trash and rodents when News 12 first reported the story in 2018. The Sanitation Department came by to clean it up after News 12's report. But residents say the problem continued.
For the first time in months, Keoin Marshall says the shrubs have been cut and a lot of trash has been removed. He says after his repeated attempts to solve the issue, a young man, who is not the property owner, came by this weekend to work on the yard.
Marshall showed News 12 photos of what the area used to look like -- a jungle of garbage and neglect. He says it's especially concerning because it's right across the street from a school and there are students walking by daily.
The Department of Sanitation told News 12 that getting access to clean the property takes multiple steps, including sending the property owner a notice telling them to take care of the issue.
DSNY said in a statement, "After the notice is issued and the date expires, DSNY will inspect the property and if it is still dirty and accessible (not fenced or locked), we clean it. DSNY must go through this process each time when addressing a private property."
Marshall says for now, he is relieved that the property has been at least partially tidied, but he's calling on the property owner or the city to maintain this effort.
