Nassau County lawmakers are yet to vote on a plan to phase in changes to property tax bills.

Jafar Rahman says that change means the property taxes on his family's Garden City home will almost double. Many Nassau property owners will see their taxes either increase or decrease by hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars as a result of changes to the way the county assesses properties.

That's why Democratic county lawmakers say the Nassau Legislature must pass a bill to phase in the impact of the tax changes over the course of five years. The plan was approved by the state Legislature on April 1 but still requires the approval of the Republican-controlled county Legislature.

Republican lawmakers say they are waiting for the county to provide residents with updated tax impact notices before they act.

County Executive Laura Curran says it's time to put politics aside and "get this done" to protect taxpayers. And some residents say they need the phase-in.

Curran submitted her phase-in bill, which she calls the Taxpayer Protection Plan, to the county Legislature more than a month ago. There is some time to approve it, though. If approved, the legislation would impact the 2020-21 tax year.
