A Nassau legislator is calling for an investigation into some breast implants and their potential link to a rare cancer.
Medical experts say macro-textured implants have been linked to a rare form of cancer.

"Today, I am calling for an investigation into these textured breast implants by the FDA to determine once and for all if they should be taken off the market,” says Nassau County Legislator Rose Walker.

The European Union has recently banned the use of the textured implants. Officials say Canada suspended the sale of them last week, and the company that makes them has now voluntarily pulled them from the market.

"The FDA had a meeting in March and the decision was to do a registry of patients that have undergone this kind of a treatment and follow them and make sure they've connected the dots,” says Dr. Kaveh Alizadeh, of LI Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Alizadeh points out that not every case of implants, just because it’s textured, will lead to the rare form of cancer.

Geri Barish, a breast cancer survivor and longtime awareness advocate, says the FDA needs to be more aggressive.

"When you hear about a country that is suspending it, when you hear about the manufacturer stopping making it, you have to be smart enough to know that something is going on here,” says Barish.

Dr. Alizadeh says 1 in 30,000 women who have the specific implants have been diagnosed with that rare form of lymphoma.
He also says there have been no confirmed cases of any women with smooth implants.
