A Hofstra University fraternity has been suspended over video purportedly showing students forcing a dog to drink beer from a keg.
The roughly five-second video appears to show someone at a backyard party picking up a dog and putting a beer dispenser into its mouth. Nassau County SPCA investigators say the footage is disturbing, cruel and unacceptable.
"That dog had no choice. It didn't say, 'Hey, I want a beer and I want it poured down my throat,'" says Gary Rogers, of the Nassau SPCA. "So it's wrong on every level."
Investigators say the owner of the dog, who appears in the video, is a 21-year-old Hofstra senior and member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity.
An SPCA investigator went to the fraternity house to check on the welfare of the dog, an approximately 10-month-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel. They say they dog was in the frat house, is healthy and clean, has food and water and is in a good environment.
Hofstra University says the fraternity's chapter is suspended while the incident is under investigation. A frat spokesman says they've ordered all fraternity activities to cease and desist and that they hope to use the incident as a "teaching moment" for its members.
Some neighbors of the frat house say they're fed up with its members.
"That's all they do -- drink, play football," says Walter Szpaczynsky. "Can't stand it anymore."
SPCA investigators ordered fraternity members to take the dog to a veterinarian Monday for blood work and other exams. Once all the evidence is gathered, the SPCA and the district attorney will make a decision on whether criminal charges will be filed.
Later Monday, the SPCA said the dog owner signed it over to the SPCA and is no longer living in the frat house.
