Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill Sunday that would add more than 600 speed cameras in school zones throughout the city.

The bill will also expand the cameras’ hours of operation.

Speeding cameras will now be active from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. to catch drivers speeding through school zones.

Gov. Cuomo says the Speed Zone Camera Program will be adding 600 more speed cameras around different school districts across the five boroughs. He says since cameras have been installed, fatalities in school zones have decreased by 55%.

Until now, the cameras were only allowed to be on an hour before the start of the school day and up until an hour after school is dismissed, but the new law will leave the speed cameras on for an extended amount of time.

Drivers who are caught speeding through school zones can expect to see a $50 fine in the mail.

Most speed cameras will be installed in areas where the most accidents have been reported.
