Parking woes: Huntington parking increase set to go into effect this summer

Posted: Updated:
HUNTINGTON -

Parking is going to cost more in Huntington, and the news isn't sitting well with people who shop or work in the village.

At a board meeting last month, town officials approved a resolution making all parking $1 an hour. Some meters are still 50 cents an hour.

Councilman Mark Cuthbertson voted against the increase, saying it wasn't supposed to happen until town officials talked with business owners, or were moving towards other parking solutions, like a parking structure.

"I'm sorry on behalf of the town that we have now shut you out of the process and not made good on our promise that if we were going to do this, we would involve you," he says.

Town officials say the increase is set to go into effect this summer.

In a statement to News 12, Huntington Town Supervisor Chad Lupicacci said in part, "Parking turnover is important for the entire downtown Huntington economy; the equalization of rates will increase turnover for all on-street parking."
