LIRR train strikes tractor-trailer at Farmingdale crossing

A Long Island Rail Road train struck a tractor-trailer Wednesday at a grade crossing in Farmingdale.
The incident happened around 5:40 p.m. at the Merritts Road crossing. The train involved was the 4:51 p.m. out of Penn Station.
Officials say the truck driver jumped from the cab when he saw the train coming. The train smashed the front of the cab, sending debris flying.
Witnesses say the tractor-trailer was stuck on the tracks when the gate started to come down.

Hannah Sweeting, of Islip, was stuck on the train for almost two hours. She says passengers were frustrated over a lack of communication about the situation from LIRR officials.
A little after 7 p.m., the train involved began moving and let off passengers at the nearby Farmingdale station.
No injuries were reported. Officials say the truck driver and train operator both refused medical treatment.
LIRR service on the Ronkonkoma branch was suspended in both directions between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma but has since been restored.
