A Shirley man was indicted Tuesday on charges alleging he ran a prescription drug trafficking operation out of his home.
Authorities say a raid at Daniel Hassler's Baybright Drive West home turned up oxycodone pills and17 long guns, including four assault weapons. They also found 29 high-capacity magazines and more than 30 boxes of ammunition.
To increase his supply, prosecutors say the 39-year-old Hassler targeted people he knew, including low-income seniors, who were legally prescribed pills. District Attorney Tim Sini says Hassler then bought the legitimate drugs and resold them at a higher price.
Police were tipped off by neighbors who for years witnessed what they believed to be suspicious activity at the house.
The Town of Brookhaven has condemned Hassler's Shirley home. A spokesperson says problems there include an unsafe electrical box and boiler, and a septic system that flows into the street.
Hassler is set to be arraigned on Friday.
According to court records, Hassler's father, who died in 2016, had been convicted on felony drug charges. A neighbor says she blames Hassler's father for getting her son hooked on drugs.
