A former basketball player for Nassau Community College charged with second-degree manslaughter in connection with a deadly crash now faces an assault charge.
Prosecutors say 23-year-old Dana King Jr. waited outside of his ex-girlfriend's house and gave chase after she got into a car with 22-year-old Jimmy Hayes. They say it resulted in a reckless, high-speed chase that spanned about 5 miles, from Valley Stream to Hempstead.
Prosecutors say King Jr. rammed the other car, sending it into a fire hydrant and then a tree. Hayes, a father of two young girls, died at the scene. Isabel Rodriguez, 21, was seriously injured in the crash.
King Jr. and his family left court Tuesday without speaking to press. Hayes' family walked out of the first-floor courtroom yelling at the defendant.
Defense attorney Michael DerGarabedian wouldn't say much about the case, claiming he has to go through evidence handed over by the prosecution.
King Jr. was set to graduate from Nassau Community College this month, but he's currently out of school.
The judge issued an order of protection for Rodriguez.
King Jr. remains free on bail and is due back in court June 10.
