A man driving in the high-occupancy vehicle lane on the Long Island Expressway had a mannequin masquerading as a passenger, according to authorities.

Suffolk County police say James Britt had the mannequin strapped into his passenger seat around 4 p.m. Monday. It was wearing multiple shirts, jeans, sunglasses and a hat.

Police say Britt was traveling near Exit 51 while HOV occupancy rules were in effect.

Britt, a 34-year-old from Centereach, was issued a summons.

There's actually no law prohibiting a mannequin or dummy from sitting in the passenger seat. Police say the infraction solely rests on Britt trying to skirt the HOV lane restriction.

No one answered the door at Britt's home, but News 12 spoke with some neighbors who had a good laugh about the situation.

Three years ago, the Highway Patrol officer who pulled over Britt also stopped another driver who had a mannequin in the passenger seat.
