Authorities say a 3-year-old girl died of injuries she suffered while in a burning car in Springfield Gardens, Queens.
The NYPD is calling the car torching a homicide, resulting in the death of 3-year-old Zoey Pereira. Nearby, police discovered a badly burned 39-year-old man, but they have not yet said if that man is the girl's father. He was hospitalized in serious but stable condition. Nassau County police say they had been looking for the child and her father prior to the discovery.
A 2008 Audi sedan caught fire just before 9 p.m. Sunday on Baisley Boulevard. It's less than a mile from where police say the child lived with her mother. News 12 is told that a propane tank was found in the car and may have fueled the fire. But there's no word yet on an official cause or motive.
Nassau police say they responded Sunday night to a Valley Stream home, where the child's father lives, after reports the girl had been taken from there.
Valley Stream neighbors say they didn't often see the girl or her father, as they mostly kept to themselves.
The NYPD has not released the name of the driver or charged him with a crime.
