A recent surge in recent anti-Semitic crimes has police on Long Island working on strategies to keep local houses of worship safe.

Fears of violence at houses of worship have been heightened following the deadly shootings at synagogues in Pittsburgh and Poway, California.

The Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island held a safety and security briefing with Nassau and Suffolk officials on Thursday. Officials say they're working to make sure the faithful are protected in any house of worship.

At the Chai Center in Dix Hills, leaders say it's better to be prepared than scared, which is why the center underwent a major security upgrade last year.

Rabbi Yakov Saacks says it's also important to stand strong in the face of adversity.
