An Anti-Defamation League report finds that anti-Semitism is at a "near historic high" in the U.S.
Rabbi Yakov Saacks, of the Chai Center in Dix Hills, says he's "troubled but not surprised" by the results.
The annual ADL report found that the number of Jewish people physically assaulted in 2018 more than doubled over previous years. The findings come six months after the deadly attack at a Pittsburgh synagogue and just days after the shooting at one in California.
The ADL says there were nearly 1,900 anti-Semitic incidents nationwide in 2018 -- 340 in New York state and 43 on Long Island.
Saacks says it's important for congregants to remember to hold their heads high in times of adversity.
The Nassau County Police Department tells News 12 that both anti-Semitic assaults and incidents have decreased from 2016 to 2018. It says that there was only one anti-Semitic assault in 2016; with 2017 and 2018 having none.
The department also says in 2016, there were 43 anti-Semitic incidents and in 2018, anti-Semitic incidents decreased to 28.
Suffolk police did not provide statistics on anti-Semitic assaults and incidents.
