Long Beach officials say they're concerned that a project to rebuild the city's jetties needs more work.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the end of a multimillion-dollar beach restoration project and says the jetty portion of its work is done. But state Sen. Todd Kaminsky says he wants a guarantee that the jetty work was done properly before crews leave.
"There's no way that the city or the state have millions of dollars to fix the groins," Kaminsky says. "There's always other priorities, other storms in other parts of the country, attention shifts away. When you have manpower here, you want to use it."
There are about two dozen jetties along the barrier island, from Long Beach to Atlantic Beach westbound and Point Lookout to the east. The Army Corps worked on all but a handful of them in a project that began two summers ago.
Bill Rottkamp, of Oceanside, regularly walks along the boardwalk and also wonders if the jetties are supposed to look like they do, saying they might need "a little bit more work."
The Army Corps of Engineers sent News 12 a statement saying: "We are working with the City of Long Beach to alleviate any concerns they may have about the project. The project is performing as designed and meets our expectations."
