State restores $4M in funds for program that helps vets with PTSD

WHEATLEY HEIGHTS -

Nearly $4 million in funding has been restored for the Joseph P. Dwyer Peer Support Project, which helps veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Iraq War veteran John Damato came out of his house Friday, with his service dog Meyers, to thank officials for funding the program that he says saved his life. After he was diagnosed with PTSD, he still has nightmares about his time in the military.

The project also helps veterans with PTSD transition into their post-service lives.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, along with other elected officials, announced that $3.75 million was restored in the state budget for the program.

Veterans say being part of the Dwyer Peer Support Project lets them know they are not alone and that they can talk to other men and women who had similar experiences, allowing them to help each other.

Damato, who's now a volunteer for the program, says the money means veterans can continue to get the critical care they need.

The Joseph P. Dwyer Peer Support Project is named in honor of Pfc. Joseph Dwyer, a Mount Sinai native who died in 2008 of an accidental drug overdose while suffering from PTSD.
