Small plane crashes in Valley Stream amid foggy conditions

VALLEY STREAM -

Officials say a small plane ran out of fuel and crashed into the front lawn of a Valley Stream home amid foggy conditions Sunday night.

A Cessna 172 carrying three people on board crashed nose-down around 10:15 p.m. on Clarendon Drive. No homes or cars were hit. The plane became tangled up in the overhead wires and was left dangling.

All three males on board were able to get out; one of them was slightly injured.

Nassau police say the plane was rented from Danny Waizman Flight School and Aircraft Rental, which runs out of Republic Airport in Farmingdale. The three men, from Flushing, Queens, flew to Niagara, New York, early Sunday morning and were on their way home. Investigators believe the pilot may have become disoriented in the fog.

Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says the pilot missed the Republic Airport runway four times and was then redirected to John F. Kennedy International Airport. He says the pilot missed the runway there twice and ran out of fuel.

The plane was removed from the front lawn Monday afternoon, as crews worked to take the wings off and load it onto a flatbed to haul it out of the neighborhood.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the 27-year-old pilot has had a commercial license since 2013.

The National Weather Service had issued a dense fog advisory at the time of the crash.
