The family of a young Long Island girl is partnering with the New York Blood Center to hold a series of special blood drives.
Christian Olivia celebrated her first birthday on Saturday. She was diagnosed with sickle cell at birth, and has spent much of her young life in the hospital receiving treatment and blood transfusions.
Her family decided to try to give back in a show of gratitude for the help they've received from Cohen's Children's Hospital. So for Christian Olivia's birthday, they organized a blood drive on her behalf.
About one in every 365 African American children are born with sickle cell, and require regular transfusions.
