Long Beach could soon be the first city in Nassau County to ban the intentional release of balloons.

City officials say the move is meant to cut down on litter, preserve the beach and protect wildlife that could ingest released balloons.

City Council Vice President Chumi Diamond says the legislation would add to other environmentally friendly measures taken by the city, including enacting a 5 cent plastic and paper bag fee that went into effect in 2017.

The ordinance in Long Beach is up for a vote on Tuesday. If the balloon ban passes, anyone who intentionally releases balloons could face a $250 fine.

Government agencies releasing balloons for scientific purposes, would be exempt from the ban.

East Hampton voted to ban people from releasing balloons in February. Turtles, dolphins, seals and other animals have died getting tangled in them or swallowing them. Violators in East Hampton could face a fine of $1,000, up to 15 days in jail, or both.
