The Town of Oyster Bay is reportedly putting a temporary stop on euthanizing dogs until an evaluation is done on the shelter's practices, according to Newsday.
The town's supervisor made the request after residents voiced concern about the number of dogs being put down.
Around 23% of dogs taken in last year were euthanized.
A spokeswoman says the town is meeting with experts, staff and animal rights advocates.
