Comptroller audit: Some LI school districts not properly prepared for mass shooting

A new state audit questions whether more than a dozen New York school districts have adequate safety plans in place to communicate with police in the event of a mass shooting, like the one in Parkland, Florida.
New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says the audit found that 15 school districts visited by his team, including Brentwood and Rockville Centre, failed to file and update emergency plans required under the Safe Schools Against Violence in Education Act, also known as the SAVE Act, of 2000. The audit placed the blame on the state Education Department.
Rockville Centre Superintendent William Johnson says his district is in compliance, having "done everything by the book."
Brentwood Superintendent Richard Loeschner says he was surprised to hear about the audit. Loeschner also says his district has filed an emergency plan and shared it with local police.
The state Education Department says it is improving its practices and that there's nothing more important than protecting children.
A department spokesperson also says in a statement: "We thank the Comptroller for these recommendations and recognizing our limited staff resources as we always look to improve our practices and to help schools create safer spaces for students and a school climate that is positive and safe for all."
